Losardil 100mg/12.5mg Tablet is an oral combination antihypertensive medication designed for patients who require multi-pathway management to lower elevated blood pressure. It combines two highly effective active ingredients in a single tablet: Losartan Potassium (100mg), an Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker (ARB) that relaxes and widens blood vessels, and Hydrochlorothiazide (12.5mg), a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that helps the kidneys eliminate excess water and salt from the body. Together, they reduce fluid volume and lower vascular resistance, offering superior blood pressure control compared to either drug used alone.
Treatment of Hypertension: Prescribed to treat high blood pressure in adults whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled on losartan or another ARB alone.
Stroke Risk Reduction: Indicated to lower the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged heart wall), although this combination benefit may not apply to all ethnic demographics.
Standard Adult Dose: 1 tablet taken once daily.
Individualized Adjustment: The 100mg/12.5mg strength is typically prescribed after a patient has been initiated on lower strengths of the individual components or combination therapies and requires an optimized maintenance dose. The maximum daily dose is typically 100mg/25mg.
Take this tablet once daily at the same time every day, exactly as directed by your physician.
It can be swallowed whole with a full glass of water with or without food.
Timing Tip: Because this medication contains a diuretic (water pill) which increases urination, it is highly recommended to take your dose in the morning to prevent waking up during the night to use the bathroom.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose.
Dizziness, lightheadedness, or a feeling of spinning (vertigo), particularly when rising quickly from a sitting or lying position.
Increased frequency of urination.
Fatigue, mild weakness, or headache.
Upper respiratory tract irritation, cough, or sinus pain.
Minor digestive upset, such as nausea or abdominal pain.
Pregnancy and Fetal Toxicity: This medication is strictly contraindicated during pregnancy. Discontinue the medication immediately if pregnancy is detected. Exposure to ARBs during the second and third trimesters can cause severe, life-threatening injury, renal failure, and skull deformities in the developing fetus.
Electrolyte Imbalance: The diuretic component can cause your body to lose potassium, magnesium, and sodium, or retain calcium. Your doctor will perform routine blood tests to monitor your serum electrolytes and kidney function.
Sulfa Allergy Warning: Hydrochlorothiazide is a sulfonamide derivative. Do not take this medication if you have a known history of severe allergic reactions to sulfa-containing drugs.
Dehydration & Low Blood Pressure: Excessive sweating, severe diarrhea, or vomiting can lead to a dangerous loss of body water, causing a sudden, sharp drop in blood pressure (hypotension). Stay properly hydrated and report prolonged illness to your doctor.
Blood Sugar & Uric Acid: Thiazide diuretics can occasionally increase blood glucose levels (requiring monitoring for diabetic patients) and raise uric acid levels, which may trigger a gout attack in susceptible individuals.
Store the tablets below 30°C in a dry environment, protected from moisture, direct heat, and safely out of reach of children.
