LIMPET 3MG TABLET

Description

Limpet 3mg Tablet is an intermediate-strength oral antidiabetic medication prescribed to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. It contains Glimepiride as its active ingredient, which belongs to the sulfonylurea class of medicines. Limpet works primarily by prompting the beta cells in the pancreas to release more insulin into the bloodstream. It also enhances the body's peripheral tissue sensitivity to insulin, helping cells clear sugar out of the blood more efficiently to prevent long-term diabetic complications.

Uses

  • Management of Type 2 Diabetes: Used in conjunction with a structured diet and regular physical exercise to lower blood glucose levels when lifestyle changes alone are insufficient.

  • Combination Therapy: Frequently prescribed alongside other blood sugar-lowering treatments (such as metformin) or long-acting insulin when a lower dose or a single medication does not achieve target HbA1c levels.

Typical Dose

  • Standard Maintenance Dose: 3mg taken once daily.

  • Dose Adjustments: Dosage is highly individualized. Based on your daily blood glucose readings and periodic HbA1c tests, a doctor may adjust the dose up or down. The maximum recommended daily dose is typically 6mg to 8mg.

How to Take

  • Take this tablet exactly as prescribed by your physician. Swallow it whole with a full glass of water; do not crush, split, or chew it.

  • Crucial Timing: Take your dose immediately before or during a substantial breakfast (or before your first major meal of the day if you regularly skip breakfast).

  • Meal Consistency: Never skip a meal after taking Limpet 3mg. Because this medication actively forces your body to produce insulin, skipping a meal can cause a dangerous and sudden drop in blood sugar.

Common Side Effects

  • Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar): This is the most frequent side effect, especially at this higher strength. Watch out for sudden cold sweats, shaking, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, blurred vision, headache, and confusion.

  • Mild digestive upset, including nausea, vomiting, stomach pressure, or a feeling of fullness.

  • Temporary visual changes when first starting or adjusting the medication due to shifting blood glucose levels.

  • Weight gain.

Important Warnings

  • Hypoglycemia Preparedness: Always carry fast-acting glucose (such as hard candies, fruit juice, or glucose tablets) with you. If you experience low blood sugar symptoms, consume sugar immediately. Ensure your close family or friends know how to recognize these symptoms.

  • Not for Type 1 Diabetes: This medicine cannot be used to treat type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or diabetic comas, as it relies entirely on a functioning pancreas.

  • Contraindications: Avoid using this drug if you have severe kidney disease, severe liver impairment, or a known allergy to sulfonylureas or sulfonamides.

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: This medication is strictly contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor immediately to transition safely to insulin therapy.

  • Store the medication below 30°C in a dry environment, protected from moisture and kept safely out of reach of children.
