Description

Losardil 50mg/12.5mg Tablet is an oral combination blood pressure medication that brings together two distinct antihypertensive mechanisms in one pill. It contains Losartan Potassium (50mg), an Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker (ARB) that blocks the hormone responsible for narrowing blood vessels, and Hydrochlorothiazide (12.5mg), a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that prompts the kidneys to flush out excess salt and water. By simultaneously relaxing the blood vessels and reducing overall fluid volume in the body, this combination lowers blood pressure more effectively than either drug taken by itself.

Uses

• Treatment of Hypertension: Prescribed to lower high blood pressure in adults whose condition is not adequately controlled on losartan or another ARB alone.

• Initial Therapy for Severe Hypertension: Sometimes used as a first-line treatment for patients with severe high blood pressure who require multiple medications to reach safe target levels.

• Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: Helps reduce the long-term risk of stroke in hypertensive patients who also show left ventricular hypertrophy (enlargement of the heart wall).

Typical Dose

• Standard Adult Dose: 1 tablet taken once daily.

• Dose Range: If your blood pressure remains elevated after 3 to 4 weeks on this strength, your doctor may increase the dosage to a higher combination strength, up to a maximum daily dose of 100mg losartan and 25mg hydrochlorothiazide.

How to Take

• Take this tablet once daily at the same time every day, exactly as directed by your healthcare professional.

• It can be swallowed whole with a full glass of water, either with or without food.

• Timing Tip: Because this medication contains a diuretic that increases urination, it is highly recommended to take your dose in the morning. Taking it late in the evening may cause you to wake up during the night to use the bathroom.

• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one entirely. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed tablet.

• Blood Sugar & Gout: Thiazide diuretics can occasionally increase blood glucose levels (requiring closer tracking for diabetic patients) and raise uric acid levels, which may trigger a gout attack in susceptible individuals.
