Active Ingredient: Omeprazole (40mg) formulated as enteric-coated micro-pellets compressed into a tablet.
What is MUPS? MUPS stands for Multiple-Unit Pellet System. The tablet dissolves quickly in your stomach, breaking down into thousands of individual, enteric-coated micro-pellets. This advanced design provides:
Consistent and uniform absorption with fewer fluctuations in drug levels.
Superior drug absorption compared to standard capsules.
Significantly reduced risk of "dose dumping" or localized stomach lining irritation.
What it does: It is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by disabling the $H^+/K^+$ ATPase enzyme system (the "acid pump") inside the parietal cells of the stomach, significantly reducing daily stomach acid secretion.
Prescribed for: High-dose therapy for severe or treatment-resistant acid conditions, including severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), refractory oesophagitis, active gastric and duodenal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and combination regimens for H. pylori bacterial eradication.
Dosage & Administration
Standard Regimen: The typical adult dose is 1 tablet (40mg) taken once daily, or as directed by your physician.
How to take: Take this tablet with a glass of water. Thanks to the MUPS formulation, it can be taken with or without food, though taking it on an empty stomach in the morning is generally preferred for maximum acid-suppression timing.
Do NOT crush or chew: The tablet must not be crushed, broken, or chewed. Chewing destroys the protective enteric coating on the micro-pellets, making the medicine inactive in stomach acid.
Alternative for Swallowing Difficulties: If you cannot swallow tablets, place the MUPS tablet into a glass of plain water (do not use other liquids). Stir gently until the tablet completely disintegrates into tiny pellets, and drink the mixture immediately (within 30 minutes). Rinse the glass with a splash of water and drink that too to ensure you get the full dose. Do not chew the pellets in the liquid.
Contraindications & Warnings
When NOT to use: Do not take if you are allergic to omeprazole, other PPIs (like esomeprazole or pantoprazole), or any inactive ingredients in this tablet.
Masking Critical Symptoms: Consult your doctor immediately if you experience "red flag" symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or black/bloody stools. Cosec MUPS can relieve symptoms of gastric cancer, potentially delaying a critical diagnosis.
Clopidogrel Interaction:Avoid taking Cosec MUPS if you are taking the blood thinner Clopidogrel. Omeprazole inhibits the CYP2C19 liver enzyme required to activate clopidogrel, making your blood thinner significantly less effective and increasing cardiovascular risks. Consult your doctor for a safer PPI option, such as Pantoprazole.
Long-Term Use Risks: Continuous use of high-dose PPIs (40mg) for more than a year can lead to severe magnesium depletion in the blood (hypomagnesemia), Vitamin B12 deficiency, and a slightly increased risk of bone fractures (especially of the hip, wrist, or spine).
Side Effects
Common: Generally well tolerated. Mild and temporary side effects include headache, nausea, mild diarrhea, flatulence (gas), abdominal pain, or mild dizziness.
Warning Signs: Stop taking the medicine and consult your doctor immediately if you develop severe, watery diarrhea that does not stop (which can indicate a *C. diff* bacterial bowel infection), muscle spasms or tremors (signs of low magnesium), or an unexplained skin rash.
