Apit 40mg Tablet is an oral prescription medication manufactured by Drug International Ltd. It contains Megestrol Acetate (160mg), which is a synthetic progestin (a derivative of the natural female hormone progesterone). In this high-strength tablet form, it acts primarily as an antineoplastic (anti-cancer) agent. It works by altering hormone receptor pathways and blocking the production and utilization of estrogen in the body, which helps suppress the growth of hormone-dependent cancer cells. Additionally, it acts on the brain's hypothalamus to stimulate appetite and promote weight gain.
Palliative Treatment of Advanced Cancers: Used as a form of hormonal chemotherapy for the palliative management of advanced, recurrent, or metastatic endometrial carcinoma (cancer of the uterine lining) and breast cancer.
Treatment of Cancer-Induced Cachexia: Prescribed to manage severe appetite loss (anorexia), extreme muscle wasting, and significant weight loss in patients with advanced cancers or HIV/AIDS.
For Breast Cancer: The standard adult dosage is 160mg taken once daily (1 tablet per day).
For Endometrial Carcinoma: The standard adult dosage ranges from 160mg to 320mg per day (1 to 2 tablets daily), taken either as a single daily dose or divided into smaller doses throughout the day.
For Appetite Stimulation/Wasting: While the liquid suspension is frequently used for high-dose wasting therapy, doctors may prescribe 400mg to 800mg per day using tablets.
Note: Treatment must be continued continuously for at least 2 months to properly determine if the medication is working effectively against advanced cancer.
