Losardil 50mg Tablet is an oral antihypertensive medication containing Losartan Potassium (50mg) as its active ingredient. It belongs to a widely prescribed class of medications known as Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs). Losardil works by binding to and blocking the actions of angiotensin II, a hormone that naturally causes blood vessels to tighten and narrow. By preventing this hormone from working, the medicine relaxes and widens your blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more smoothly and effectively lowering elevated blood pressure.
Treatment of Hypertension: Prescribed as a first-line treatment to lower high blood pressure in adults and children 6 years or older, lowering the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events (like heart attacks).
Kidney Protection in Diabetes: Indicated to protect kidney function and slow down the progression of renal disease in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes and a history of proteinuria (protein in the urine).
Stroke Prevention: Prescribed to lower the risk of stroke in patients who have both high blood pressure and left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged heart wall).
Standard Adult Starting Dose: 50mg taken once daily. This is the most common initial dose for the vast majority of patients starting hypertension therapy.
Maintenance Range: Depending on how your blood pressure responds after 3 to 6 weeks, your doctor may maintain you at 50mg once daily or increase it to a maximum of 100mg once daily.
Special Adjustments: A lower starting dose (such as 25mg) may be initiated for patients with a history of liver problems, severe dehydration, or those taking high-dose water pills.
Take this tablet once daily at the same time every day, with or without food.
Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Try not to chew or crush it.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember that day. If you don't remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take two tablets to make up for a missed one.
High blood pressure rarely shows physical symptoms. Continue taking Losardil 50mg precisely as prescribed, even if you feel perfectly healthy.
Dizziness or lightheadedness, particularly when standing up quickly from a sitting or lying position (orthostatic hypotension).
Upper respiratory tract infections, nasal congestion, or sinus inflammation.
Mild fatigue, drowsiness, or muscle weakness.
Back pain or leg pain.
Minor stomach upset, nausea, or diarrhea.
Fetal Harm & Pregnancy: Losardil must never be taken during pregnancy. If you discover you are pregnant while on this medication, stop taking it and contact your doctor immediately. Exposure during the second and third trimesters can cause severe, fatal damage to the unborn baby's kidneys and skull.
Potassium Levels (Hyperkalemia): This drug can cause your body to retain potassium. Avoid using potassium supplements, salt substitutes containing potassium, or potassium-retaining water pills unless specifically told to do so by your doctor.
Kidney and Liver Monitoring: Your healthcare provider will likely order routine blood tests to monitor your kidney function (creatinine) and blood potassium levels, especially if you have existing kidney or liver problems.
Dehydration & Low Blood Pressure: If you experience severe vomiting, diarrhea, or heavy sweating, you run the risk of becoming dehydrated, which can cause your blood pressure to drop dangerously low. Ensure you stay properly hydrated.
Store the tablets below 30°C in a dry place, completely safe from moisture, heat, and out of reach of children.
