Active Ingredient: Ciprofloxacin (as Hydrochloride) 500mg.
What it does: It is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by targeting and inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes. This prevents the bacteria from replicating and repairing their DNA, leading to rapid bacterial cell death.
Prescribed for: A wide range of bacterial infections, including moderate-to-severe urinary tract infections (UTIs), respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia and bronchitis flare-ups), bone and joint infections, skin infections, typhoid fever (enteric fever), and infectious diarrhea.
Dosage & Administration
Standard Regimen: Usually 1 tablet (500mg) taken twice daily (every 12 hours). The duration of treatment depends strictly on the type and severity of the infection, usually ranging from 3 to 14 days.
Important Rules: Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it at the same times every day helps maintain consistent medication levels in your body.
Mineral & Dairy Restriction:Do not take this tablet at the same time as dairy products (like milk or yogurt) or calcium-fortified juices. Also, avoid taking it within 2 hours before or 6 hours after taking antacids, multivitamins, iron, zinc, or magnesium supplements, as they bind to the antibiotic and stop it from absorbing.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day while taking this medicine. This keeps you well-hydrated and prevents the drug from forming crystals in your urine (crystalluria).
Contraindications & Warnings
When NOT to use: Do not take this medication if you have a history of allergic reactions to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolone antibiotics. It must never be taken at the same time as the muscle relaxant tizanidine.
Tendonitis & Tendon Rupture: Fluoroquinolones carry an increased risk of tendon swelling and rupture (especially the Achilles tendon). This risk is higher in patients over 60, those taking corticosteroid medications, or kidney transplant recipients. Discontinue use and rest immediately if you experience sudden tendon pain or swelling.
Nerve & Brain Effects: Use with caution if you have a history of seizures, epilepsy, or kidney impairment (which requires a lowered dose). In rare cases, it can cause nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) or central nervous system effects like severe anxiety or confusion.
Myasthenia Gravis Warning: This drug can worsen muscle weakness in people with myasthenia gravis and should be avoided.
Photosensitivity: Your skin will be highly sensitive to the sun. Avoid tanning beds and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight; wear protective clothing and sunscreen when outdoors.
Side Effects
Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or mild stomach discomfort.
Headache, dizziness, restlessness, or temporary changes in taste.
Warning Signs: Stop taking this medication and contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe, watery, or bloody diarrhea (which may indicate a serious C. diff infection), sudden joint/tendon pain, numbness/tingling in your hands or feet, or a rapid, irregular heartbeat.
