Losardil 25mg Tablet is a low-dose oral antihypertensive medication containing Losartan Potassium (25mg) as its active ingredient. It belongs to the class of drugs known as Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs). Losardil works by binding to and blocking the actions of angiotensin II, a hormone that naturally causes blood vessels to constrict and narrow. By inhibiting this hormone, the medication relaxes and dilates the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more smoothly and effectively lowering elevated blood pressure.
Initial Treatment of Hypertension: Prescribed to lower high blood pressure in adults and pediatric patients 6 years or older. It is often used as a starting dose for individuals who may be sensitive to blood pressure drops.
Special Subpopulation Management: Used for hypertensive patients who have volume depletion (dehydration), are taking high-dose water pills, or have a history of liver issues, where a standard 50mg starting dose might be too strong.
Kidney Protection in Diabetes: Indicated to protect renal function and slow down the progression of kidney disease in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes and a history of proteinuria (protein in the urine).
Standard Adult Starting Dose: 25mg to 50mg taken once daily. The 25mg tablet is typically selected as a starting dose for elderly patients (over 75 years old) or those with hepatic (liver) impairment.
Maintenance Range: Your doctor will monitor your blood pressure over 3 to 6 weeks. Depending on your response, the dose may be maintained at 25mg or titrated up to 50mg or 100mg once daily.
Take this tablet once daily at the same time every day, with or without food.
Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not chew, crush, or split it unless advised by your doctor.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember that day. If you don't remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not take two tablets at once to compensate.
Continue taking your medication exactly as prescribed, even if you feel perfectly healthy. High blood pressure usually has no noticeable physical symptoms.
Dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint, particularly when standing up quickly (orthostatic hypotension).
Fatigue, tiredness, or mild muscle weakness.
Upper respiratory tract congestion, runny nose, or a dry cough.
Minor stomach upset, nausea, or mild diarrhea.
Fetal Harm & Pregnancy Warning: Losardil must never be used during pregnancy. If you discover you are pregnant while on this medication, stop taking it and contact your physician immediately. Exposure to ARBs during the second and third trimesters can cause severe, fatal damage to the unborn baby's kidneys and skull.
Potassium Accumulation (Hyperkalemia): This drug can cause your body to retain potassium. Avoid taking potassium supplements, using salt substitutes that contain potassium, or taking potassium-sparing water pills unless monitored by your doctor.
Kidney and Liver Monitoring: Your healthcare provider will schedule periodic blood tests to monitor your kidney function (creatinine levels) and blood potassium, especially if you have a history of liver or kidney disease.
Dehydration Risk: If you suffer from severe vomiting, diarrhea, or heavy sweating, you run the risk of becoming dehydrated. This can cause a sudden and dangerous drop in blood pressure.
Store the tablets below 30°C in a dry place, protected from moisture, heat, and safely out of reach of children.
