AMLOCARD 10MG TABLET

Description

Amlocard 10mg Tablet is an oral prescription cardiovascular medication manufactured by Drug International Ltd. It contains Amlodipine Besylate (10mg), which belongs to a class of medicines called dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers (CCBs). Amlocard works by relaxing the smooth muscles within the walls of your blood vessels, causing them to widen and dilate. This process lowers elevated blood pressure and reduces the overall resistance the heart must pump against, making it significantly easier for the heart to circulate blood while improving oxygen delivery to the heart muscle.

Uses

  • Management of Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Used either alone or in combination with other blood pressure medications to lower high blood pressure, helping to prevent long-term complications like strokes, heart attacks, and kidney failure.

  • Chronic Stable Angina: Prescribed to reduce the frequency and severity of chronic exertional chest pain (angina pectoris) caused by narrowing of the coronary arteries.

  • Vasospastic Angina (Prinzmetal's or Variant Angina): Indicated to prevent chest pain caused by sudden, spontaneous spasms in the heart's blood vessels.

  • Crucial Note: Amlocard is a long-term preventive treatment and cannot be used to stop an acute, sudden attack of chest pain that is already occurring. Always use your prescribed fast-acting rescue medication (such as sublingual nitroglycerin) for emergency chest pain relief.

Typical Dose

  • Standard Adult Starting Dose: Usually 5mg taken once daily, which your doctor may increase to the full 10mg once daily based on your blood pressure and clinical response.

  • Maximum Daily Dose: 10mg per day. Do not exceed this limit.

  • Elderly or Liver Impaired Patients: Treatment is often initiated at a lower dose (typically 2.5mg once daily) because the drug is processed more slowly by the liver in these individuals.

How to Take

  • Take this tablet once daily at the same time every day (morning or evening) to ensure consistent blood pressure control over a full 24-hour cycle.

  • It can be taken with or without food, swallowed whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, break, or chew the tablet.

  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if your missed dose is delayed by more than 12 hours, skip that dose entirely and take your next tablet at your usual scheduled time. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

  • Rise Slowly: To prevent a sudden drop in blood pressure that can cause dizziness or fainting, avoid standing up too quickly from a sitting or lying position.

Common Side Effects

  • Peripheral Edema: Fluid retention causing noticeable swelling in the lower legs, ankles, or feet (this is a very common, dose-dependent characteristic of calcium channel blockers).

  • Headache, dizziness, or a feeling of lightheadedness.

  • Flushing (a sudden feeling of warmth or redness in the face and neck).

  • Unusual tiredness, fatigue, or a feeling of weakness.

  • Mild nausea, abdominal discomfort, or palpitations (an irregular or pounding heartbeat).
