CIPROZID 0.3% EYE/EAR DROP

Description & Uses

  • Active Ingredient: Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride equivalent to Ciprofloxacin (0.3% w/v or 3mg/ml).
  • What it does: It is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It exerts a fast-acting bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase enzymes, which are vital for the replication, transcription, and repair of bacterial DNA.
  • Prescribed for: Treatment of superficial ocular bacterial infections, such as bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye), corneal ulcers (keratitis), blepharitis, and bacterial ear infections (like otitis externa).

Dosage & Administration

  • For Bacterial Conjunctivitis / Blepharitis: Typically, instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) every 2 hours while awake for the first 2 days, and then 1 drop every 4 hours for the next 5 days.
  • For Corneal Ulcers: The standard intensive protocol is 2 drops into the affected eye every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours, then 2 drops every 30 minutes for the rest of Day 1. On Day 2, instill 2 drops hourly. From Day 3 to Day 14, place 2 drops every 4 hours.
  • For Ear Infections: Instill 2 to 3 drops into the affected ear canal every 2 to 3 hours initially, then gradually reduce the frequency of application as the infection improves.
  • Crucial Hygiene Rule: Wash your hands thoroughly before use. Do not touch the dropper tip to your eye, fingers, skin, or any other surface to prevent contaminating the remaining solution.
  • Discard Window: Once opened, discard the bottle and any remaining solution after **30 days**.

Contraindications & Warnings

  • Contraindications: Do not use this medication if you have a known history of hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any component of the drops.
  • Contact Lenses: Do not wear contact lenses while you have symptoms of a bacterial eye infection, or while applying this medication.
  • Overgrowth Warning: Prolonged use of anti-infective drops can lead to an overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. Discontinue use and contact your doctor immediately if a new infection or skin rash develops.

Side Effects

  • Transient local burning, stinging, or mild discomfort immediately following instillation.
  • White Crystalline Precipitate: In patients treating corneal ulcers with intensive dosing, a harmless white crystalline buildup may temporarily appear in the eye. This is a common, non-harmful precipitate of the drug that eventually clears.
  • Itching, red eyes (conjunctival hyperemia), lid margin crusting, or a metallic/unpleasant taste in the mouth after administering.
  • Warning Signs: Stop using and consult an ophthalmologist immediately if you experience severe eye pain, changes in vision, swelling of the eyelids, or a skin rash.
